Healthy to the finish line

At Vroom Funderingstechnieken, sustainable employability is about much more than just staying healthy. It means ensuring that people, young and old, can do their work with enjoyment and in good health – from their very first working day until retirement. HR employees Ariëlle, Corali, and Jerry explain how they shape this at Vroom.

Sustainable employability at Vroom is not a buzzword, but a way of thinking, according to Ariëlle. “We look at everyone: from the new entrant to the employee who is close to retirement. Work in the foundation sector is physically demanding, so we want people to be able to keep up with their work and continue to enjoy it.” Jerry adds: “It already starts at the job interview. I honestly explain that this is a tough profession, working outside in all weather conditions with lots of movement and lifting tasks. We look for people who understand that and are motivated to roll up their sleeves.”

Attention from day 1
That focus on sustainable employability starts right at entry. “New employees receive an introduction training, our so-called car wash, are guided by experienced mentors, and follow vocational training through vocational school Crescendo. We look at potential, not just experience. Some newcomers master the trade quickly, others need more time. If the motivation is there, we can turn anyone into a skilled worker,” Jerry explains. Attention is also given to outflow. “We already hold early-stage conversations with older employees about their vision of the future,” says Corali. “Some want to keep working after retirement, others count down to their free time. Both are fine, as long as we can shape it together in a good way.”

Tailor-made and human
Vroom consciously chooses a personal approach. “A gym membership doesn’t suit our target group,” says Ariëlle. “We look at what works per person. One gets adjustments to the workplace – from a modified chair in the crane or a mirror in a different spot – and another we guide into a different role. This way, experienced workers often stay longer.” Corali gives a few examples: “A machine operator who is physically less capable may become a project leader or mentor. That way you use the knowledge and relieve the body. It’s always tailor-made, never a fixed protocol.”

Lighter work, better work
Physical strain has decreased in recent years. Jerry: “In the past, you had to drive fifty piles in a day, and the work was physically much heavier. Thanks to technological advances in equipment and tools, the work has not only become lighter but also much safer. We invest in ergonomic cabins, reduced vibrations, and better visibility with cameras. That helps the older generation now and provides more work comfort for future employees.” Clients also play a role. “At large projects, such as data centers, strict rules apply for rest and safety.”

Care for each other
In addition to physical health, there is a lot of attention for mental fitness. “If someone isn’t feeling well, it often comes to light quickly,” says Corali. “We have a safe atmosphere where people dare to share their story.” At signs of stress or private problems, Vroom acts quickly: “We work together with the occupational physician and professional counselors, such as psychologists and coaches. That’s part of good employer practices. If the help we provide isn’t sufficient, the process continues outside of us. Of course, the work is important to us, but even more important are our people.”

Involvement
The involvement goes far. “Sometimes we’re half psychologists,” says Jerry with a smile. “But it works. People feel seen and appreciated. And you can see that in their loyalty.” Vroom’s involvement also shows in activities outside of work. Ariëlle: “Partners, children, and retired employees with long service are also welcome at staff association activities, barbecues, and jubilee afternoons. That strengthens the bond, not only with the employee but also with the family. This way we build a close-knit club.”

Looking to the future
Sustainable employability is also strategically important. “The labor market is tight,” says Ariëlle. “That’s another reason why it’s important to invest in the people we already have. But at a family business like Vroom, togetherness is truly part of the DNA. The work changes, but people always remain central to us. As long as we keep listening and offering tailor-made solutions, we as a company will stay healthy – just like our people.”
